Tsunami Relief Operations by District Administration Kannur

 

A REPORT ON TSUNAMI INCIDENTS IN KANNUR DISTRICT

 

Tsunami waves  has been affected in the coastal belt of Kannur District from 26.12.2004  to 28.12.2004. Normal life of the coastal area was   affected.

            The following departments were advicsed to participate in the relief operations.

3.                  Police

 One Keezhe Valappil Soman, 57 years, Muzhappilangad village, Kannur District has died due to this inciden

No injury has been reported. No crops loss also reported.

18 relief camps were opened.  Food and medicines were arranged to the inmates of the relief camps.  Doctors were deployed by the DMO, Kannur as directed by the District Administration

The Tahsildar, Kannur reported that 150 houses were partially damaged.  The estimated cost of loss comes to Rs. 37,50,000/- .

Damages to fisherman were estimated to Rs 1,78,00650/-. For the coastal areas of  Ayyikara, Dharmadam, Thalai, Gopalpetta, New Mahe, Ezhara Kadapuram, Palacode, Puthiyangadi  and Chootad.

Damages caused to house hold articles in the afftected area was estimated as Rs 1,75,000/- in the coastal areas of Ayyikara, Palacode , Puthiyangadi and Chootad.

Damages caused to crops in the afftected area is estimated as Rs 22,09,800/- in the coastal areas of Palacode , Puthiyangadi and Chootad.

The approximate cost of the damages caused to the fisherman sector and to the properties comes to Rs.5,00,00,000/-

Necessary directions were given to the Secretaries of the Grama Panchayaths were the incidents occured, to remove the waste deposited due to the incident, to avoid epidemic.  The DMO, Kannur also directed to act. 

The concerned Tahsildars were directed to supply drinking water to the affected areas.  They were also directed to clear and remove the waste from the wells if  required.

The Govt.  have accorded sanction to supply of free ration @ 5kg rice for one week for  one month as per GO(RT) No.5348/2004/RD dated29.12.2004.  According to the GO, directions were given to the concerned Tahsildars and Taluk Supply officer, for supplying free ration to the victims of Tsunami.

As per letter No.82(23784)04-PMF dated 27.12.2004 from the Joint Secretary, Prime Minister's office, an amount of Rs.1,00,000/- to be granted to the next kin of the deceased due to the incident.
