Rural Development Department started function in Kerala on 24th January 1987. The charge of Rural Development activities at State Level holds by the Commissioner of Rural Development and at District Level by Assistant Development Commissioner (General) and the co-ordination of Central Schemes by the Project Director of Poverty Alleviation Unit (District Panchayath). The Co-ordination and functioning charge of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is held by the Joint Programme Co-ordinator.
